Outdoor Lighting Science Project
Goal: To upgrade neighborhood lights so that all light shines below horizontal angles and not up into the night sky!
Hardware:
Full-Cutoff Motion-Sensor Floodlight Cost: $30.00 Available: Home Depot.
Decorative Full-Cutoff fixture, Sky & Telescope "Hot Product" Cost: $60.00
upgrades Yardlights to Full-Cutoff standard Cost: $30.00
Demonstration: Develop a mobile lighting experiment composed of two "heat lamps" with large screw on/off shields, fitted with identical 13 watt compact fluorescents(that do not extend past shield).
You will demonstrate the contrast between "shielded lighting" and unshielded lighting.
The unshielded lighting, that is with the shield removed, replicates: "Acorns"-bulb up, Yardlights/Streetlights-bulb down. The shielded unit pointed downwards demonstrates the advantages of full-cutoff lighting. Let your audience see the difference for themselves! Involve neighbors in your project by emphasizing that low-glare, shielded lighting improves safety, visibility and efficiency. Adding a motion sensor significantly improves security and energy savings. In short, Everyone Wins!
Document: Take "before" and "after" pictures illustrating your outdoor lighting makeover. If you can obtain a light meter, take "before" and "after" readings from various points in the yard.
Sequel: Give demonstrations and presentations at city council and zoning meetings. Work with legislators on all government levels to preserve our greatest national heritage: the starry heavens! Be the driving force behind the United States' first national lighting ordinance!
With the spirit of patience and perseverence, you'll make a difference in the battle against Light Pollution!
